We are all part of the world in which we live. In "The Gift," Andy feels the family connections that bind him to kith and kin, while Vena in "Better Prospects" struggles to break the ties that bind her to a dying planet. She yearns to make her escape into outer space, which she calls "the big wide." Meanwhile, James Turner in "Whale Boy" longs to dive deep and swim with the humpback whale he knows as Salt. In "Sweet Dreams," the goddess Hi'iaka is tied to her fiery sister Pele by obligation; after all, Pele carried her as a baby all the way to Hawaii in an oversized egg nestled against her breast. Sometimes it's hard to feel grateful. In this issue's Expressions, Gretchen Hohmeyer, however, feels grateful for the ropes that connect her to safety as she rappels down a very scary cliff in Switzerland. Think about the ties that bind, the connections we feel between ourselves and family members or whales or outer space or music or nature …
