The Slam: Rules
The Slam has few rules for submissions and critiques, but we’re real hardheads about the ones we’ve got. Don’t test us, folks!
Slammables submissions:
1. The Slam accepts only three kinds of submissions: poetry, microfiction, and creative nonfiction. Novel writers, go bark up some other tree.
2. Poetry should be 50 lines or less. We ain’t looking for The Iliad here.
3. Microfiction and creative nonfiction should be 800 words or less. That’s right—eight hundred. So keep ’em short, people!
4. Submissions containing extremely graphic sexual content and violence will not be considered. If you want to see stuff like that, go turn on your TV.
5. Entries will only be copyedited to remove the most egregious spelling and grammatical errors. Don’t count on us to save your skin if you’re too lazy to pick up a dictionary or proofread your own submission.
6. We aren’t heartless. To protect those whose egos aren’t as strong as they thought, we’ll attach only your screen name (which you choose) and, if you fill in the optional Location box, we'll add state or country of residence to each entry.
7. To make things nice and legal, you must be at least 14 to participate. And this site is not for the elderly—if you’re over 23, you’re over the hill as far as we’re concerned, so don’t bother submitting.
8. Submissions without a valid e-mail address, name, and age will not be considered. You must submit all of the information requested in the specific fields. We won’t give your information to anyone—not your freaky next-door neighbor, not your online significant other, not even to your grandma.

Critiques:
1. Any criticism, no matter how harsh or glowing, will be displayed, but it has to be reasonably connected to the work and have valid literary merit. (“This poem sucks!” and “I love this poem!” are not examples of valid constructive criticism.)
2. Critiques should be 150 words or less. Your comments may be edited for content, grammar, or length, but see rule number five above.
3. Only screen names (which you choose) and, if desired, state or country of residence, will be shown with comments. This way, the authors whose writing you slam won’t be able to hunt you down and throttle you.
4. Just as with the slammables submissions, you must be between the ages of 14 and 23 to participate.
5. Critiques without a valid e-mail address, name, and age will not be posted. You must submit all of the information requested in the specific fields. (See rule number 8 above.)
Are you ready to dish out the praise and the pain? Then check out the slammables here and take advantage of the critiquing feature on any that you deem worthy.
