The Slam: Slammables

An Ode to Ella Fitzgerald

by Louise Porter, Connecticut

Dear Ella,
What you create is an umbrella
Of music and sound
You, in yourself, you are profound
Nothing separates you and me
When we share the music, you see
It encircles your soul
Lyrics written to console
Your soft, gentle voice
Played as means to rejoice
You’ll always be a legend and idol
Of tidal
Proportions in the world of jazz
Your comforting swing has
Inspired years of musicians
Fed starving ambitions
Ella, I love you
On you I grew
Signed,
A dedicated fan

Slammings

I enjoyed this poem. Not only because I love Ella Fitzgerald, but I loved how you made it seem like a letter, starting with "Dear Ella" and ending with "Signed, A dedicated fan." However, I did think that some of the line breaks were a little confusing and broke the flow of the poem and that some of the rhymes were a little forced. Overall, though, it was a great poem. Nice work.
